Burlesque as you like it – Not a family show

I recommend you see this tantalizing show Burlesque as you like it – Not a family show; it has everything you want and more to be enlightened. Elaborate costumes and skin with performances that will leave you amazed and wanting more. Shows are at The Basement Theatre from March 25th.

fashion.org.nz have the pleasure of interviewing performers Callum Stembridge and Eve Gordon from the show for a little sneak peek into the world of Burlesque…

What enticed you into becoming a burlesque performer?

-Eve-

The perception that burlesque and stripping are of the most empowering things a woman can do. I needed to find out for myself what the truth of this is. It is such a complex discussion with so much subjective content that I found it impossible to answer or even begin to understand purely on a theoretical level!

The meaning of Burlesque has evolved over time and even today is slightly varied from Europe to America, how do you personally define burlesque?

- Callum-

It is a cabaret style of entertainment that uses sexy charm & some intelligent provocation to enthral & seduce its audience.

What is your favourite performance garment/accessory?

-Eve-

A beautifully cast latex cunt. (And if you aren't comfortable with writing that... write "my beaded nipple fringe")

What item of clothing do you feel most sexy in?

- Callum-

In a section of this show I wear a fabulous cream suit with a cravat and a broad brimmed Panama hat that - I adore it! Most of the other artists around me at that stage are in nothing so my feelings may be affected by them as well as the suit.

I've felt sexy in shorts and a singlet, in a lava lava, in a full suit. The cloths can bring it out yes but it's about the wearer.

What is your ideal burlesque outfit?

-Eve-

Something that references the history of this bizarre performance form and innovates it in some way.

What is your favourite fabric?

-Eve-

Lycra (I’m an aerialist! What can I say?! You can't move enough in anything else!).

Do you think Burlesque costume needs contemporising or is the old-glamour screen siren look what makes it special?

- Callum-

Some of us have been discussing this with a passion. The old looks are fun, sexy, classy but we must move on. Not just the in the look but in the whole ethos. Use the inspiration of the classics & mould them into how we feel & act now. The greatest music does this. It also needs to be an individual thing. Daring to express who you are rather than being a carbon copy of someone or something else.

What makes up a burlesque outfit?

- Callum-

The charm & seduction of the person wearing it. The knowing smile, the twinkle in the eyes, the hint of intelligence, the performers sense of fun. Without those the most lavish costume is just thread.
